Today I really started to see Berlin!
I got up at 8:30am, early enough to not have competition for the shower. Then, I pick up a 72hr transit card went into the main station. From the main station, I wandered a bit. I saw a lot of construction!
After overheating a bit from the sun and very hot weather. I hopped on another train, which took me to checkpoint charlie.
Then, I went across the street to the Topographie des Terrors, a free and very good exhibit covering how the nazi party came to power, the adrocities they committed, how they were defeated and Berlin in the aftermath of WWII. The museum has both an outdoor and indoor component. The outdoor part includes ruin of the nazi secret police headquarters and a large section of the Berlin wall. The indoor part is a traditional exhibit and is air conditioned and you can fill up your water bottle there… so awesome on hot days!
Afterwards, I headed towards the Brandenburg Gate. On the way I took a look at some of the local shops.
Near the Brandenburg Gate there is a small memorial to people that died trying to cross the Berlin wall.
Right next to the Brandenburg Gate there is a beautiful public park called Tiergarten, which is where I went next. But first I got a curry wurst which is apparently a very Berlin dish.
At Tiergarten I saw two memorials: one to the soviets killed in the battle of Berlin and another to the Sinti and Roma people killed by the nazi regim.
As a walked out of Tiergarten, I ran into Berlin fashion week. After observing the lastest in Berlin fashion I moved on again.
As I walked, I ran into a shop dedicated to Berlin’s crossing signals of all things…
Then, I ran into a free exhibit on high tech fashion.
After taking a look around, I moved on and checked out the Berlin dome and the TV tower.
Near the dome I saw a guy who was making t-shirts using the engravings the the sewer covers.
Soon after, I decided it was time to return to the hostel. After relaxing a bit. A group of us got together and played circle of death/kings cup/etc, apparently its a drink game that everyone knows but has a different name for it and slightly different rules.
Then, we went as a group to check out the Berlin club scene. Aparently, its slightly (majorly) different than the American one. The music is lyricly techno and the expected dance is more of a bouncy sway. Not really my thing but trying new things is fun and I met a lot of new people!
Wow you have been busy. So interesting to read.
